What are tie clips and bars for?

These two accessories serve the same purpose, albeit in slightly different ways. They both exist to secure your tie to your shirt to prevent it from swinging or shifting out of place.

What’s the difference between a tie bar and a tie clip?

While a tie bar (sometimes referred to as a tie slide) works by sliding across your tie, a tie clip clamps onto the tie like a clothes peg. Tie bars are typically lower-profile and sleek, whereas a tie clip stands out from the torso ever-so slightly, giving it a bolder presence.

Where do I wear a tie clip or tie bar?

A tie clip should sit on or just above the lowest part of your chest – generally, between the 3rd and 4th buttons on your shirt. It should also be visible with a jacket or waistcoat on.

Can you wear a collar pin and a tie bar or clip?

This can tend to look a little over-accessorised, so we recommend keeping it streamlined with one or the other. At the end of the day, tie bars, clips, and indeed, pins are a subtle affectation designed to enhance your outfit, not distract from it – so keep it simple!
